Heeswijk Castle and Brabants Landschap: Inseparably linked
natural gem
The estate consists of a mix of old, venerable deciduous forest, former coppice woodlands, and fields and meadows, all situated in the Aa valley. Due to the straightening of this stream in the first half of the 20th century, the stream valley had become severely dried out. Fortunately, starting in the 1980s, there was a growing realization that desiccation is just as bad as flooding and that water must be “stored” in the right places.
Because the estate has been designated by the government as a “Wetland Gem,” the Aa has been restored to a natural stream over a 15-kilometer stretch. This benefits kingfishers and meadow damselflies. The adjacent meadows are once again blooming with flowers. A meander that was cut off in the 1930s has been reconnected to the stream, allowing stream-dwelling fish such as the minnow to pass an obstructive weir.
Heeswijk Castle is inextricably linked to Brabants Landschap. Together, we ensure that a visit to the Heeswijk Estate is one you won’t soon forget.
