The Icons of Heeswijk

New icon wall tells a centuries-old story

We are proud to open the icon wall at Heeswijk Castle on December 18: the first phase of the “Aanschouw” project, in which religious art from the castle’s collection is being brought back to life. Thanks to a long-term loan from Berne Abbey, a remarkable ensemble of thirty-five icons now shines near the former study of Baron Willem van den Bogaerde van Terbrugge.

These icons, once collected by the baron during his years as a diplomat in Bucharest and Sofia, each tell a unique story of generosity, history, and connection. It is a moment we as a team have worked toward with great pride.

The "Aanschouw!" project will continue to expand in the coming months and is made possible in part by support from the Cultuurfonds, the Paul de Gruyter Fund, and the Dr. Hendrik Muller’s Vaderlandsch Fund.

A subtle yet impressive new dimension to the castle’s splendor.

Especially for this occasion, the beautifully designed and richly illustrated book *Heeswijkse Iconen* is available, featuring an introductory chapter written by Abbot Emeritus Piet Al. The book offers an in-depth look at the icon collection and is available for €9.95.
