The maid of Baroness Albertine

Back in time ... of course, a high tea at the castle would not be complete without the historical stories of tea drinking with Baroness Albertine. These anecdotes add a unique and personal touch to the High Tea. Like the story of Annie, a maid of Baroness Albertine: "When I was still living at home in a tenant farm, near the castle I worked for Baroness Albertine for 8 years (1957-1965). I was a maid and came there daily. One day I was even allowed to let (Princess) Beatrix in. Fortunately, I didn't have to say anything and she nodded kindly. I brought in the tea on a large silver tray and set it down for the Baroness, who liked to pour the tea herself. In good weather, the Baroness often sat outside. Then I walked with my large tray from the kitchenette outside, down the stairs and all the way to the back of the garden. And then it could be that the Baroness said, "Annie, would you bring another jug of hot water?" "How much I walked back then!"

Tradition of the Baroness

High Tea at Heeswijk Castle goes beyond tasty treats. It reflects the hospitality that Baroness Albertine herself offered to her guests. An anecdote tells the story of a lady who first came to tea with the Baroness. "Would you like a kakie with it or a piece of honey cake?", the Baroness asked. Well, honey cake the woman had never had before so she thought that would be nice. Eventually a maid arrived there with the tea and with it, no pastry, but a simple slice of gingerbread. But not to worry, At the Barones there is definitely a delicious honey nut cake on the menu now.

A Tea Banquet

As if that were not enough, Castle Heeswijk offers a High Tea experience as special as the history of the castle itself. The following story is also distinctive, taking you back in time. The story is about a gentleman and his fellow students who did a paper on the castle. To thank them, they were invited to a "tea banquet," also called "thé banquet." The students had agreed in advance not to eat too much. They arrived at the castle at 2:30 p.m. and were indeed treated to a cup of tea and, yes, the now characteristic slice of gingerbread. It was a very formal affair, but that was how it was in those days.
