Een heus schavot, waar je met je hoofd en handen in wordt geklemd. Een schandpaal, voetboeien en een duimschroef. Wie in de late middeleeuwen een misdaad had begaan, stond geen prettige behandeling te wachten. Lijfstraffen waren destijds heel gewoon en als gevangene was het nog maar de vraag hoe je uit een ‘ondervraging’ kwam. De verzameling van oude martelwerktuigen in de kerkers van ons kasteel zijn stille overblijfselen van een tijd die we wat misdaad en straffen betreft liever achter ons laten. 

Je kunt ze natuurlijk wél komen bekijken. Want sinds kort zijn onze eeuwenoude kasteelkelders opengesteld voor bezoekers. De kelders zijn gerestaureerd en educatief ingericht. Hier krijg je als kasteelgast mooie verhalen te horen over de oude gevangenissen, maar ook over archeologie, topmonumenten en middeleeuwse ridders en jonkvrouwen.

De oudste delen

Ons kasteel gaat overigens verder in de tijd dan je zou verwachten. De oudste delen van de kasteelkelders dateren al uit de elfde eeuw. Even rekenen: dat is bijna duizend jaar geleden! Destijds vormden ijzeroerbrokken het fundament voor het allereerste mottekasteel. Uiteindelijk werden er drie meter dikke kasteelmuren gemetseld, voorzien van schietgaten voor de kanonnen. Het kasteel moest tenslotte goed beschermd blijven tegen vijanden en kwaadwillenden. 

Genoeg te ontdekken

Prominent in het bosrijke Brabantse land schittert het monumentale Kasteel Heeswijk, het mooiste kasteel in Brabant.

Geen verborgen terrein meer

De kelders vormden voor de museumbezoeker tot voor kort verboden terrein. Kasteel Heeswijk opent nu definitief de trap naar de kelders. Met wat inlevingsvermogen komen hier de middeleeuwen echt tot leven. Naast de restauratie van de kelders is er ook aandacht voor opgravingen in de kasteelgracht en voor rondreizende ambachtslieden die monumenten bouwden.

Ontdek verborgen verhalen

Als toeschouwer leer je met behulp van een digitale speeltafel hoe door alle jaren heen mensen in Brabant kwamen wonen en hun toekomst bouwden. Ontmoet de laatste baron, die je in een video zijn ‘verborgen verhalen’ vertelt, over hoe hij zich nog steeds ridder op het kasteel voelt. Voor kinderen maken we het extra leuk: zij kunnen terecht in de verkleedhoek, om zich als een echte jonkvrouw of ridder uit te dossen. De opening van de kelders wordt verricht door – hoe kan het ook anders – een ridder in harnas.
