After centuries of storms, sunshine and Brabant history, it's time for a major renovation: the 17th-century slate roof of Heeswijk Castle is getting a well-deserved makeover! This is no ordinary roof - no one less than Louis XIV, the Sun King, slept under these slates, and this is where the intrigues of Baron André van den Bogaerde and his family took place. Now you can be part of this unique history!
A roof for the future
The roof of the oldest part of Heeswijk Castle is covered with slates in a typical medieval southern Dutch manner: the Maas cover. This tradition, found along the Meuse River from France to Brabant is centuries old. The slates were brought from quarries in France across the Meuse to the Netherlands - a costly roofing material, which especially graced wealthy churches and castles.
Castle Heeswijk 's original slates came from Fumay, France, but that quarry is now a thing of the past. Fortunately, a perfect match has been found in the Welsh company Penrhyn. These new slates will be carefully laid in the traditional Maas covering, so that the roof will soon be able to withstand centuries of use.
The restoration is supervised by renowned architect Rick Jonkers, executed by craftsmen from Leidekker Van de Kimmenade and directed by Bouwbedrijf Van de Ven. With the support of the Province of NorthBrabant and the National Cultural Heritage Agency, this project is coming to life, but your help is indispensable.
